Simcast has integrated digital dental production into its laboratory for over five years, beginning with digital partial framework design and extending to SLM metal printing and resin 3D printing.
Laboratories and practices can submit digital cases as digital files and receive finished products without the working model leaving the laboratory or surgery.
The digital dental workflows begins with a digital design. For framework cases, we use CAD software to design the partial framework on the digital model. The design then goes to SLM printing for metal production, or to our resin printer for models and trial components.
We accept digital files from a wide range of intraoral and desktop scanners, including common systems from Dentsply Sirona, 3Shape, Planmeca and Medit.
If you are unsure whether your scanner output is compatible, contact us and we will advise before you submit your first case.
Framework designs are produced using professional dental CAD software, following the prescription provided on the lab sheet. If a design decision requires clarification, we contact you before proceeding.
After design, metal frameworks go to SLM printing or the casting workflow. Resin components go directly to the 3D printer. All designs are retained so any case can be reproduced from the original file.
Digital workflows improve accuracy and reduce the risk of impression distortion. A digital file can be transmitted to us immediately after the appointment, compressing the production timeline and eliminating the risk of model damage in transit.
A digital impression processed through a calibrated CAD system produces a more dimensionally stable result than a conventional impression in many cases. For SLM-printed cobalt chrome frameworks, the digital-to-manufacturing pathway means the geometry of the design is reproduced precisely in the finished component.

What is the turnaround time for cobalt chrome frameworks?
Our standard turnaround time is five to six working days from receipt of the case. An express service may be available for urgent cases, please call us at 01202 421 442 to check availability.
What file formats do you accept for digital submissions?
We accept STL, OBJ, PLY and DCM files for digital submissions. If you are unsure about compatibility with your scanner or design software, please contact the laboratory.
Physical models can also be sent to the laboratory by post.
Do you provide trial frameworks?
Yes. Plastic trial frameworks can be produced on request if you would like to check fit before the final cobalt chrome framework is manufactured.
Is there a minimum order quantity?
No. Laboratories can send individual cases or larger volumes. There is no minimum order requirement.
Do you work with laboratories across the UK?
Yes. Dental laboratories across the UK can send cases to Simcast. Digital files can be submitted online, or physical models can be posted to the laboratory in Christchurch.
Do you guarantee the fit of the framework?
Yes. All frameworks are guaranteed to fit the model or digital scan supplied with the case.
